The in 2012 founded The Petulant from Copenhagen release their
debut album three years after the EP "The Petulant". "Dictum" will
be available from the 25.08. and it will shake your domestic
speakers.
The opening starts off without an introductory
intro and fires immediately. Banging guitars merge with fine drum
work and a growling and wrenching singing from Asbjørn, who also
plays the bass.
Integrated changes of the speed and the
rhythm provide for diversity in the songs. The two-part guitar work
is skillfully staged by aggressive, straight-forward riffs, which
merge into melodic solos now and then. This way they create a
powerful sound that is, among others, influenced by the Bay Area
from the early nineties.
The middle part of the album becomes
somewhat more melancholic with "My Caesar". Deep, dragging guitars
und the throttled speed create a sinister mood that provides for a
cut in the sound and thus offers some loosening.
"The Nation"
is the ending, which is initiated by a playful guitar intro before
it gets down to the nitty-gritty. The guitars fight an angry duel
and the drums swirl like crazy. Unfortunately, the song gets a bit
long-winded in the end and thus loses some charm.
Conclusion:
A fine first work which offers perfect death metal regarding the
music and the craft. However, it should bring out more individual
main points in order to remain in the memory. In my oppinion there
are too few "highlights", which would give the disc the needed final
touch and thus create a higher recognition value.
